Starting from arts and culture, it seeks to create environments, opportunities and relationships that enable everyone to connect with culture, and to share more widely across society the meanings and values that emerge through cultural participation. Research to date suggests that engaging with arts and culture can have positive effects, particularly on mental health and social wellbeing.

Experiencing culture, art and other forms of expression can help us relax, become more aware of our own senses and feelings, and connect with others. Cultural Prescribing is not a substitute for medical care. Rather, the excitement and curiosity we all have, the feeling of wanting to try something new, and moments when we step away from everyday life and focus on our own senses and imagination can themselves become a kind of “prescription” that supports our health and wellbeing.

Social Prescribing, which has become increasingly widespread in countries such as the UK, is described by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a means for health-care workers to connect patients to a range of non-clinical services in the community to improve health and wellbeing. Rather than simply treating symptoms, it seeks to address the underlying causes of illness and other health difficulties, offering a more holistic approach to health care. WHO also describes Social Prescribing not as an intervention in itself, but as a “pathway” that connects people with community resources according to their needs.

While Social Prescribing is a system and pathway through which health and care services connect people with resources in their communities, Cultural Prescribing starts from arts and culture. It opens up relationships between people and culture and, through the encounters and participation that grow from these relationships, builds bridges to health and wellbeing.

At aa-tomo TODAY, we wish to share the idea of cultural prescribing with a wider audience.
