Manchester Art Gallery in the UK not only fulfills traditional museum roles such as preserving, collecting, and exhibiting artworks but also engages in projects where artists collaborate with local residents and related organizations.

One such project is Uncertain Futures. Focusing on intersectional inequalities faced by women over the age of 50, this project was implemented in collaboration with various communities in the region. Led by American artist Suzanne Lacy, and conducted in collaboration with an Advisory Group of fifty women from local communities, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester City Council, the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, and many other parties.

The project integrates artistic expression, research, and activism to shed light on how gender, age, class, ethnicity, immigration status, and disability intersect to produce inequalities in society, bringing to the fore the lived experiences of residents in Manchester.

Through the project, they try to encourage people to change their own ways of thinking and catalyze positive social change.

The video Suzanne Lacy: Uncertain Futures – What Kind Of City? introduced below was created as part of the project. The National Center for Art Research has provided Japanese subtitles to aid in understanding this activity. The original video is available on the official YouTube channel of Manchester Art Gallery.
